| Cord Blood Donation There can be some very heated debates regarding this issue. Most people regard this as a wonderful opportunity to give back as if it is the right thing to do. I assure you the hospital will not fully disclose all information on donating your cord blood, so doing your own research is important. I personally do not support cord blood donation for several reasons. Read the section on early cord clamping under intervention misconceptions if you haven’t already. Basically, it is not a good idea to clamp the umbilical cord too early. This deprives the baby of its blood. It can take the baby on average six months to make back all the blood it won’t get if the cord is clamped too early. To donate the blood in the cord, the cord is clamped immediately following birth so that the blood that should be going to the baby is instead collected into a bag for donation! The baby needs its blood. To make things worse, if there is not a sufficient quantity in the bag, it cannot be used as intended. How often does this happen? A whopping 75% of the time! The stem cells that are used from the cord blood have actually not been showing as much promise as adult stem cells. Yes, we have stem cells too! To me, this made it just not worth it. There is also an issue of storing the cord blood called cord blood banking. This is for personal use later in the baby’s life that is thought to be able to perform some lifesaving functions if necessary. The necessity of using the cord blood is very rare, and it is extremely expensive to privately store for personal use. As one mom put it, “I was more interested in what my baby definitely needs in the present versus what my baby might need in the future”. |
