| Ferber Method Richard Ferber is a pediatrician who works with sleep disorders. His method is not designed as a parenting approach, but rather as a way to get your child to sleep through the night. His method is controversial. Some feel this is because his method is misunderstood while others do not advocate for a child left to cry even for a minute. His method does involve crying to get a child to sleep, though he never actually refers to it as crying it out. His system is somewhat similar to the Babywise method. His first book that came out in 1985 was much more strict than his latest edition in 2006. It seems after over 20 years of learning about sleep, he has come to different conclusions such as it is not harmful for children to co-sleep with their parents. For myself personally, my instinctual desire does not feel comfortable when my daughter is crying even for a moment, therefore this method will not work for us. I don’t understand why our culture makes it such a big deal for little babies to sleep through the night. I’m all for following your instincts as a parent, so I have a hunch many others will not be comfortable with this method as well. |
