| Placentophagy Placentophagy is the ingestion of the placenta following childbirth. The placenta is an amazing organ with a lot of unique properties to it. It also contains many nutrients such as iron. Placentophagy has several important benefits. It has long been used in many cultures to help a woman recover from childbirth. Some feel the placenta is supposed to be ingested following delivery. It is a very common occurrence for many other species. Ingesting the placenta can help the uterus shrink back to its normal size, help increase milk production, help prevent postpartum depression, and help prevent hemorrhage. Not a meat eater or can’t stomach ingesting it? There is a relatively easy way to dry out the placenta and put it into capsule form. There are places that are also willing to provide the service or drying and encapsulating the placenta. Very interesting concept. There is a lot of criticism surrounding this topic mainly from the allopathic medical community that say there are no benefits to ingesting the placenta. If this were true than why are so many animals instinctually designed to eat theirs? If placentophagy is too out there for you, that’s okay. It does take some getting used to. The placenta is truly an amazing organ however, and really does deserve to be respected. The medical community treats the placenta as biohazardous waste, yet there is a practice among hospitals to sell the placentas for research purposes for up to $30,000 a piece! They do not ask your permission nor disclose this to you, and they certainly don’t feel compelled to give you a cut of that profit. So, if you don’t want your placenta possibly mistreated or making a ton of money for the hospital, what can you do with it? Many people bury it in their backyards and plant a tree over it. Other people make artwork prints with it. Whatever you choose to do with it, know that it is your right to have it. Some hospitals are very accommodating, and others will make it difficult for you to take home your placenta. Of course, having a homebirth allows you to not have to deal with any of that. |
