The Birth Of Henry Oscar

I woke up Sunday morning about 6:00 am to a feeling of cramps in my
stomach.  At that point, I thought that I might just have to go to the bathroom, but
the cramps continued.  I came out and laid on the couch, trying not to wake my
husband.  My husband came out about 8:00 am and asked if I was okay. I told
him about the cramps, but it was way too early for it to be labor.  I was still two
weeks before my due date.  I decided to go take a shower in case we did have
to go to the hospital. I needed to shave my legs and get cleaned up.  After I got
out of the shower, I decided that either my water had broken or I had peed on
myself. After talking to my husband, we decided to call the hospital and see
what they thought.  I called and told them how I was feeling and what was going
on. They told me to come in and get checked out.  So, my husband did the
dishes and got cleaned up. If it was the real thing, we didn’t want our house to
be dirty when we came home with our new baby.  So, off to the hospital we
went…

On the way to the hospital, I was having contractions about every 15-20
minutes.  It was a 20 minute drive. When we got to the hospital, my contractions
were about every 5 or so minutes.  I went in, and they took me upstairs. I was
examined, and at that point, they told me that I was 4 centimeters dilated and
having my baby that day.  It was about 11:00am at this point.  Off to my room…

I got into my hospital bed and got an I.V. for fluids.  I was breathing through the
contractions and feeling some pain.  I was holding tight to my husband’s hand,
and he kept rubbing my back.  They gave me a pill to relax me a little and help
with the pain.  Then, my body took over for me. I don’t remember much of the
next couple hours.  My husband said I was on my hands and knees and my
side and just kept moving around.  He kept rubbing my back the whole time,
which helped me relax.  At about 2 pm, I told my husband that I needed an
epidural, because I was sure that I had hours more to go in labor.  When the
nurses came into check me, they told me I was already 10 centimeters dilated,
so I didn’t get the epidural.  The nurses were shocked at how fast my labor
went and had to call my doctor.  They told me if I could wait until he got there to
push that would be great, but if not, the hospital doctor was there with me.  My
doctor made it just in time. I pushed four times, and at 2:36 pm, I had 7 pound
11 ounce baby Henry.  They gave him to me right away, and then weighed and
measured him right next to me.  I could see everything while the doctor was
sewing me up.  It made everything feel so worth it.
